NATHAN'S NOTES He
Deserves our Sacrifice
Pastor Nathan Martin Rehn
August, 2008
Mark 14 :3-11 is a poignant contrast
between the woman who anointed Jesus with her lavish ointment and
Judas who sought to betray Jesus for his own profit. On the one hand
the woman poured the nard out over Jesus’ head, while Judas was
ready to betray the head of Jesus. The nard was worth an extreme
amount, in excess of $30,000 in today’s dollars. Most thought it was
a shocking waste to pour this out on Jesus, but Jesus defends the
woman by pointed out that she had treated him in advance as if he
were dead. She had anointed him for burial beforehand. Her huge
sacrifice for Jesus had a powerful use in God’s economy. She
actually may not even have known the ramifications, she just wanted
Jesus and others to know how much she valued Jesus. Jesus tells us
that what she has done will be remembered wherever the gospel goes.
She got it right. Jesus deserves all of our sacrifice. Judas got it
wrong. A little personal pleasure and profit in betraying Jesus is
the worst bargain ever.
While none of us will have the opportunity that this
lady had, yet we can demonstrate our love for Jesus by sacrifice
too. He deserves our sacrifice. Do we ever leave people marveling at
our service to Jesus? Will our stories be included in the greatest
story ever told?
